JavaLove Café - The Befores

Alrighty, we feel a little like we’re doing a Monty Python bit here (“Here’s one of Uncle Ted behind the woodshed. Here’s Uncle Ted in front of the woodshed…”) and you can rip them up as we go along if you like. (Ha! You can’t! They’re digital.)

We just had to show you the photos of the café space completely untouched - before carpets are ripped up, doors are moved, building fronts re-worked - in its current, um, pristine, 70’s-ish shape.

Almost everything you see here will change - the narrow side door w/ the awning will be gone, the front will lose its silly white-green-yellow siding - everything must go in a spectacular gutting. We’re all for preservation, but there’s nothing worth saving here - except for the original structure, and any Fun Surprises we may find as we uncover it. (We don’t know anything about the building’s history, prior to the L.A. Weekly using it for their Classified offices, but when we do find out, we’ll be delighted to share that with you.)

Meanwhile, our architect has moved with gratifying speed, and has preliminary drawings to show us on Wednesday - tomorrow!

We won’t be able to sleep tonight.

Currently digitally located on tumblr and twitter, soon to be located in the Real World at 6705 West Sunset Blvd. (will probably change to 6711), Hollywood, CA 90028.

JavaLove Café
is, as we speak, being planned and designed, and should be built and ready to go (knock wood) in September of 2012. We have an awesome-y architect already knee-deep in designs & schemes, hard at work planning the café’s construction and interiors.

On the corner of North Las Palmas and West Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood (a few blocks east of Highland; see maps in images), it’s located in the building that formerly housed the L.A. Weekly Classified Ads Dept. A new jewelry store has opened *right* in the corner position; JavaLove is just west of it (or to the left as you face them) in the same building - and naturally, on the ground floor.

We’re located right by what’s come to be known as the Cahuenga Corridor - a few doors down from Hollywood’s famous Cross Roads of the World, right by St. Ambrose Church; nearby are The Mercantile, Piano Bar/Hollywood, Boardner’s, Miceli’s, and down the street are the Cat & Fiddle, Amoeba Music/Hollywood, and the Arclight & Cinerama Dome theatres.

It won’t be a huge place - including several tables out front, it won’t seat more than 25 people or so, but what it lacks in size, it will more than make up for in taste and style. And if it does well, we hope to expand into other parts of the building. (It has the added advantage of being located just around the corner - or about fifty steps - from Ragtag Design, our graphic design business, where we conceived of JavaLove over a year ago. Ragtag will keep ragtagging during and after the establishment of JavaLove. Once a designer, always a designer.)

We don’t want to give away the farm yet - after all, we will be together talking about JavaLove for six months or so as it is being built and furnished - so for now, all we’ll tell you is that it will be both modern and warm in design (think warm colors - and see the color palette in the images) and lovely wood, with a touch of polished concrete, and a pinch of Mediterranean flavoring), and will pay particular attention to lighting. (Fluorescent lighting, especially in cafés, is a HUGE pet peeve of everyone here at JavaLove - so look for both natural sunlight and subtle/pinspotted and/or hanging lamps to light your enjoyment of our fine organic coffees and delicious bakery treats.

The menu will feature brews and bites from the lovely folks at Urth Caff
é, and we’ll also offer a few traditional treats from Armenia and the middle east, as well as some exotic treats cooked up specially for JavaLove by area bakers. We’ll offer everything from traditional American drip coffee, to cappuccinos & espressos & lattes, to hand-poured cups from specialty beans from around the world.

We’ll be fully internet-wired, and will also have some books & other publications for your entertainment and enrichment - we’ll feature some of the works of and by the Joss Whedon-sir, including comics and fan-related material. Whedon-fans are especially welcome, and will receive extra attention and discounts from the proprietors.

That’s it for now - gotta get off the tumblr and design and plan and brew and bake. Time’s a’wasting and the
café won’t build itself. As I understand it.
